Five steps to your first insight
- 1
Install Finly
Run the installer you downloaded. If Windows asks you to confirm, choose "Run anyway" — Finly is safe.
- 2
Unlock with your key
When Finly first opens, paste the license key from your welcome email. It’s verified right on your device and works offline.
- 3
Create your first profile
Personal, joint, business, or rental — every account belongs to a profile, so reports stay clean.
- 4
Import a statement
Upload a bank statement — PDF, CSV, OFX, QIF, or XLSX. Your transactions appear in seconds, categorized.
- 5
Explore
Check your dashboard, set a budget, and when you’re ready, try a tax estimate.
The complete getting-started guide
Everything the free plan includes, step by step. Ten minutes here and you’ll know your way around.
- 1
Create your profile
Finly organizes everything around profiles — Personal, Joint, Business, or Rental. Create one for yourself first; you can add more later and switch between them from the top bar.
- 2
Add your accounts
Go to Accounts → Add account for chequing, savings, credit cards, or loans. Start at zero, enter an opening balance, or simply upload a statement — Finly creates the account for you.
- 3
Upload statements
On the Upload page, drop a bank statement in PDF, CSV, OFX/QFX, QIF, or XLSX. The first time Finly sees a new bank’s PDF layout it asks you to highlight a few fields once — after that, imports are automatic. Duplicates are detected and skipped, so re-uploading is always safe.
- 4
Review transactions
The Transactions page lists every imported item, auto-categorized. Click any transaction to fix its category — Finly remembers your corrections. Use search and filters to find anything, and flag tax-relevant items as you go.
- 5
Read your dashboard
The Dashboard shows your net worth, income and spending for the last 30 days, where your money goes by category, and your recent transactions. Most numbers are clickable — drill in to see exactly what’s behind them.
- 6
Set budgets
In Budgets, give any category a monthly limit. Progress bars show where you stand mid-month, so overspending never sneaks up on you.
- 7
Track goals
In Goals, set a target amount and date — an emergency fund, a trip, a down payment. Finly tracks progress from your linked accounts.
- 8
Explore insights
Reports turn your history into answers: income vs. expenses over time, category breakdowns, and trends across months.
- 9
Catch subscriptions
Finly spots recurring charges automatically and shows them on the dashboard — the easiest place to catch a forgotten subscription.
- 10
Your data stays yours
Everything is saved on your computer, automatically — watch the auto-save indicator in the top bar. Nothing is uploaded unless you turn on device sync, and that copy is encrypted so we can’t read it.
- 11
Switch languages
Finly speaks English, French, and Spanish. Switch anytime — the whole app follows, including categories.

Ready for more?
Tax preparation (Canada T1 + US 1040), investments, and rental properties are part of the paid plans. Upgrade anytime in Settings → License — your data stays exactly where it is.
